International Baccalaureate

IB Mission Statement

“The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”

IB Community Theme & Social Justice

A highly active IB community now includes more than 2000 schools, 500,000 students, teachers, parents, staff and other colleagues in more than 125 countries. Working to continue to strengthen this large and growing community and the IB mission, which we share, the IB has initiated a new exciting project the “IB Community Theme”.

Sharing our Humanity has been recognized as the first theme and was officially launched in April 2007.

Sharing our Humanity will be focused on for the next three years and is intended to serve as a focus for the IB and IB World Schools, to capture the excellent initiatives that are already underway in many schools and encourage and inspire new activities, in and out of the classroom, around the following topics:

  • Global poverty
  • Education for all
  • Peace and conflict
  • Global infectious diseases
  • Digital divide: uneven access to information and communication technologies
  • Disasters and emergencies

(High Noon” by J.F Rischard, 2002)

International Education

The International Baccalaureate defines international education based on the following criteria:

·     To developing citizens of the world in that express culture, language and learning to live together

  • That building and reinforce a students’ sense of identity and cultural awareness
  • Fostering students’ recognition and development of all human values
  • We stimulate curiosity and inquiry to foster an excitement of discovery and enjoyment of learning
  • To equip students with the skills to learn and acquire knowledge, together or apart, and to apply these skills and knowledge to become life long learners
  • Experiencing international content while recognizing local requirements and interests
  • Encouraging diversity and flexibility in teaching methods and program delivery
  • Providing appropriate forms of student assessment and international benchmarking

The three IB Programmes together form a coherent sequence of education by promoting the education of the whole person through an emphasis on intellectual, personal, emotional and social growth.

To consider that all three programmes:

  • require inquiry across a broad range of subjects bringing together cultures from across the world
  • give special emphasis to the development and acquisition of language
  • encourage learning across all disciplines
  • focus on developing the skills of learning and becoming a life long learner
  • include the study of individual subjects and transdisciplinary areas
  • provide students with opportunities for individual and collaborative planning and research
  • include a community action service component requiring action, self-motivation and reflection

In 2004, St. Edmund Elementary/Junior High School was officially authorized to offer both the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IBPYP) and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP).

The IBO offers three programs to a wide variety of schools located throughout the world:

  • the Diploma Program (DP), for students in the final two years of school before university

  • the Middle Years Program (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16. More detailed information click here

  • the Primary Years Program (PYP) is for students aged 3 to 12.  For more detailed information click here
